PHIL STARKE STUDIO NEWSLETTER

May 2021

May has been a busy month in the Starke household.  We have officially become a pseudo farm with one pig, 2 goats (both are pregnant) and 12 chickens.  Fortunately there are 5 grandkids on the property to take care of the animals.  I just have to paint and draw them.

In April, I participated in the American Impressionist Society Small Works Showcase 2021 in Charleston, SC.  It was a great show in the "French Quarter" of the city. My painting won Honorable Mention.

Earlier this month, I received 2nd Place in the Oil Painters of America Spring Online Showcase for my painting, "Morning Chores, New Mexico".  Oil Painters of America is also having their 2021 Salon Show in Gainesville, GA, almost in my backyard. The opening weekend is June 10-13.  Above is my piece for the show, "Yellow Station, Hoschton, GA".

Mid-May I was also participating in Plein-Air New Bern in North Carolina. I spent a week with some very good artists painting along the coast of NC. I had a great time meeting and painting with everyone. The paintings that are still available can be found online at this link:

Below are some of the plein-air pieces from the show. I won Honorable Mention and the JFM Frame Award.

ARTIST AT A GLANCE

E Charlton Fortune (1885 - 1969)

Euphemia Charlton Fortune was an American Impressionist artist from California. She was trained in Europe, New York and San Francisco. She painted many portraits as well as landscape views of California and European sites. In midlife she turned to liturgical design. She signed her paintings "E. Charlton Fortune," which helped conceal her gender.

In 1905, she studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art with Arthur Frank Matthews. She also studied at the Art Students League in NYC with Frank Vincent DuMond.

In 1910 she visited England, and France where she was exposed to impressionism. She also received her first professional exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, exhibiting 27 paintings in 1911.

In 1927 she settled in Monterey and joined the newly formed Carmel Art Association. In 1928 she decided to focus on religious art and in 1958 she received the papal award Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice for outstanding achievement in the field of liturgical art.

ARTIST TIP

“Simplifying Values”

The idea of simplifying values sounds too unimportant to spend time doing. You feel like you should get on to the more important stuff like learning to mix color or learning the secrets of brushwork. But everything takes a back seat to simplifying values in your painting. Simple values sets up the composition (the most important thing), simplifies color and makes brushwork much easier to accomplish. Simplified values are the key to seeing your subject correctly. Below are some thumbnails with the subject to show how I look for the strong darks and lights, in some of the drawings I just use 2 values and in some I can use up to 4, but I try not to go beyond that. These drawings help me to set up the big shapes and values on the canvas, they help me see the composition and make it easier to make color decisions. In some of these drawings I’m using graphite pencils (6 or 8b) and in some I’m using markers, 3 or 4 different values of markers.

I noticed that you also used line! I spent quite a bit of time yesterday just blocking in using just the shadow pattern…not that easy! I think line first would simplify things!
